Trade Deadline Chaos

The trade deadline is one of the most exciting times of the year. We get to see what teams are gearing up for a playoff push, and what teams are gathering assets to do some rebuilding for next season. The NHL has seen a number of league changing trades happen in the past few weeks with the biggest ones happening in the past two days. We saw Timo Meier of the Sharks get traded to the Devils in exchange for Fabian Zetterlund, Andreas Johnsson, prospects Nikita Okhotiuk and Shakir Mukhamadullin and 2023 First Round, 2024 Second Round, 2024 7th Round Picks. Today Patrick Kane was traded to the New York Rangers for a 2023 Conditional 2nd Round and 2023 4th Round picks (The Rangers traded away a 2025 3rd Round Pick in exchange for Arizona retainign 50% of Kane's contract). Some more trades that have happened around the league in the past few days are: Sam Lafferty and Jake McCabe from the Blackhawks were traded to the Maple Leafs for prospects, Joey Anderson, Pavel Gogolev and 2025 1st and 2026 2nd round picks. The Predators traded Tanner Jeannot to the Lightning in exchange for Cal Foote and 2025 1st, 2024 2nd, 2023 3rd, 2023 4th, and 2023 5th round picks. The Blues traded Ryan O'Reilly and Noel Acciari to the Leafs for Mikhail Abramov, Adam Gaudette, 2023 1st, 2023 3rd (from Ottawa), and 2024 2nd round picks. All of these are West to East Conference trades. These trades further bulk up the Eastern Conference, shaping up for what will be a total dog fight come playoff time. But, those aren't the only trades so far. The Blues also traded Ivan Barbashev to Vegas in exchange for prospect Zach Dean. The Capitals have been very busy, making three trades in the past three days. They first traded Dmitry Orlov (50% contract retained) and Garnet Hathaway to the Bruins for Craig Smith, 2023 1st, 2025 2nd, and 2024 3rd round picks. And today they have made two trades. They sent Marcus Johansson to the Wild for a 2024 3rd round pick. And minutes ago traded Erik Gustafsson and a 2023 1st (from Boston) to the Leafs in exchange for Rasmus Sandin. The Predators traded Nino Niederreiter to the Jets for a 2024 2nd round pick. The Canadians traded Evgenii Dadonov to the Stars for Denis Gurianov. Earlier in the month, there was a blockbuster trade we did not cover, it was between the Islanders and Canucks. The Islanders acquired Bo Horvat from the Canucks for Anthony Beauvillier, Aatu Raty, and a 2023 1st round pick. There has not been many inter-conference trades, but with the trade deadline not being until Friday at 3 p.m. EST, expect there to be a lot more movement. We are going to put up a trade tracker post that includes all of the trades that happen leading up to and on Friday. The next few days we can expect a lot more trades with some big names going on the move. The trade deadline is one of the most exciting times of the year. We get to see what teams are gearing up for a playoff push, and what teams are gathering assets to do some rebuilding for next season.
