Buffalo Sabres

Next up in the Trewhockeyblogs team overview and predictions, are the Buffalo Sabres. Buffalo is an interesting team. They have been so bad for so long, but now things are really starting to look up for the Sabres. They have an incredible young core that have been developing steadily and well for them. The brightest spot in Buffalo last year was Tage Thompson. He ended up with 38 goals and 30 assists which earned him a nice new contract after his big breakout year. They also added some valuable pieces last year in the Jack Eichel trade. They brought in their captain, Buffalo native Alex Tuch, Peyton Krebs (2019 17th overall pick), a 2022 1st round pick (Noah Ostlund), and a conditional 2023 2nd round draft pick. Buffalo's forward group is really missing physical role players from their bottom 6. Kyle Okposo and Zemgus Girgensons are the only guys who would be able to take on that role, but it is never something that they have needed to do for the Sabres. Where they lack in their physicality, they make up for it with skilled players. They have a very skill oriented forward group that will end up hurting them. Even though the league is shifting towards skill guys, every team needs the intangible, gritty, sandpaper forwards that will make a hit or fight to fire the team up. The Sabres' defense is a bright point of their team, they have two former 1st overall picks in Owen Power and Rasmus Dahlin. Power only played a couple games last season, but when he was playing, he impressed. Rasmus Dahlin showed his 1st overall skill on both ends of the ice for the first time since early in his career. With Power and Dahlin on the back end, alongside more young talent such as Jacob Bryson, Mattias Samuelsson, Henri Jokiharu, and the offseason addition of Ilya Lyubushkin, Buffalo has a strong defensive group. The Sabres goalies are the biggest question mark of their team. Their goalies are Eric Comrie and Craig Anderson. Comrie, who they signed this offseason came from being a backup in Winnipeg for the past several years. Comrie has been a very serviceable option whenever he has been in net as a backup, but really hasn't had an opportunity as a starter, so it is difficult to predict what he will do this year. Then Craig Anderson, Anderson has been in the league for years and been good and bad in recent years. Last season, he played very well for the team in front of him. I think Comrie and Anderson will do a 60/40 split with Comrie taking the 60. The Sabres roster has a ton of young talent that is going to make them a scary team to play against in the next 3-5 years. Right now, they are not experienced enough to be able to make a playoff run and have too many question marks at forward and in net.
